Thermal Imaging

As thermal imaging technology has progressed over the last 50 years, the devices used to detect temperature variation have become easier to operate and much more user friendly. At Berg Engineering, we stock a wide range of thermal imagers—everything from simple meters that fit into a toolbox, all the way to top-of-the-line units that offer wireless pairing as part of a larger diagnostic system.

A thermal imager will detect infrared radiation with a range of wavelength from 9,000 to 14,000 nanometers. It displays this information as a visible image called a thermogram. Since the amount of infrared radiation emitted by a warm object increases as its temperature increases, normally invisible variations in temperature across a sample will stand out as visible color variations in a thermogram. This allows an inspector to see otherwise undetectable flaws in materials and test pieces.

The use of thermograms for diagnostics and flaw detection has increased exponentially with the advancement of the technology that enables thermal imaging. Inspection and maintenance technicians now frequently employ the use of a thermal imager to locate fatigued and failing components, such as overheating bearings within mechanical systems. Technicians also use this technology to find invisible defects and other areas of structural stress.

Increasingly, one of the more popular applications for a thermal imager is in the field of home inspection. Thermal imaging equipment allows the operator to easily discover areas of inadequate insulation and thermal leaks around windows and doors that can reduce energy efficiency optimization. A thermal imager also allows you to look for any areas of hidden water damage and mold growth after a flood so that the area can be cleaned or replaced.

If you’re not ready to purchase your own thermal imaging system, or need a unit for a special one-time project, we also have a thermal imaging equipment rental program. For a quote on a CorDex or Fluke thermal imager, or for more info on prices and availability for rental packages, call 847-577-3980.
