Infrared thermometers are used to measure temperature by measuring an object’s thermal radiation.  They are useful when checking equipment for hotspots to make sure the equipment is functioning properly.  An advantage to IR thermometers is that they do not have to be physically touching the intended target thanks to laser technology.
